Betty Benoit
Aquaculture Technician
What is your name and what do you do here?
I am Betty Benoit. I am an Aquaculture Technician.
What do you like about the work that you do?
I love my work. There’s something new every day pretty much, but it’s nice to be working with fish. It’s very soothing – very calming – feeding fish. They don’t talk back to you.
What did you do for work or school before this?
I was a cook and yeah, that was busy. So, a big, big job difference.
Tell me about a typical day of work. When does it start? What sort of duties and tasks are you responsible for?
We start at eight o’clock in the morning. We take readings of the fridges and the panels and the oxygen level in the water. We feed them and then clean. Throughout the day there are routine feedings, monitoring the oxygen levels, the condition of the fish, and cleaning. A lot of cleaning. We document everything we do through the day. During a trial we might have to weigh the fish. Mainly our job is to ensure the fish are well taken care of.
What would you tell someone who is curious about working here?
Everybody gets along well, there are great benefits and there’s room to grow here. You think about feeding fish and you’re just looking at them and they’re just swimming around and they’re busy. It’s the most calming job I’ve ever had. You’re just watching fish grow. We had eggs, so we got to watch them grow from an egg to an adult. You don’t get to do that anywhere else. It was pretty cool!
