Rosanne Mouland captains an all-female oyster scow boat which sails out of Rustico.
Women have always been involved in the Island’s aquaculture industry, primarily on shore. In recent years, though, they are increasingly taking to the water with more and more of them joining boat crews. This trend may be due to a changing perception of the industry.
Oyster farming used to be thought of as terrible, dirty, “man’s” work. No more! Today’s industry is modernized, and farmers are constantly seeking ways to do things smarter, not harder. Women have been taking advantage of opportunities to prove themselves and demonstrate that they are as capable of doing the same work as their male counterparts.
Rosanne finds working with an all-female crew no different than with a mixed-gender crew. Crews are built based on personality. With tough work and tight working quarters, it’s critical to have complementary personalities on board. Rosanne’s crew is blessed with a strong working relationship. She enjoys working with everyone in the industry. “As long as we share a mentality of working hard and getting the job done safely, that’s what’s important,” says Rosanne.
Before becoming an oyster farmer, Rosanne worked in the lobster industry. She wanted to try something new and acquire skills in a world she knew nothing about. Joining the aquaculture Industry was the best decision she ever made. As she says, “From the sail in, to the sail out, there is nothing about being on the water that I don’t love.”
